Description: The Drowsy Poet, one of my favorite places in Lynchburg, is only a couple minutes’ walk from Liberty’s campus. Don’t be confused: There is another Drowsy Poet, located in Little Dickens and Givens Books on Lakeside Drive. The Drowsy Poet I’m in love with, however, is located in Candler’s Station, right off Candler’s Mountain Road.
Candler’s Station is a great place. There’s really something for everyone. Rugged Warehouse has a ton of really cheap name-brand clothing; the dollar movie theatre provides one of the cheapest dates possible; and Cici’s has all-you-can-eat pizza for about five bucks a pop.
And then, there’s the Drowsy. I discovered it because of a friend. We had some random conversations over coffee; at least, she drank coffee, and I drank an orange cream soda, because I hadn’t quite gotten into coffee yet. She made fun of me for that, and for not having been to the Drowsy before. I’ve now righted both those wrongs, thankfully.
I discovered it with a friend but fell in love with it because of a show - My Epic, to be exact. My Epic opened for a couple of other bands, but I was focused on My Epic because their bassist and drummer lived down the hall from me. I wrote about that show in a blog; one of the things that stuck out in my mind was the contrast between the Drowsy’s small, quiet atmosphere and My Epic’s music - I think I called it “My Epic’s spin-kicking sound”.
Thus began my two-semesters-long-and-still-kicking love affair with The Drowsy Poet. I’ve seen some great shows - Andy Zipf, Bosc, Discover America... We held an Invisible Children fundraising concert outside in the Drowsy’s courtyard. Maybe I’ll even get to play there myself one of these days.
The drinks and food at the Drowsy are quality. I have the perspective of someone who likes specialty coffee drinks that don’t really taste like coffee that much. My favorite drink is the Café con Chocolate. It’s a very rich hot chocolate drink; I don’t know what exactly goes into it, but the result is good, so I don’t ask too many questions. The orange cream soda is a must. Remember those orange popsicles with the vanilla ice cream on the inside? I’m pretty sure that those are simply liquefied and bottled, and then resold as orange cream sodas. That’s exactly what it tastes like.
I guess the Drowsy represents, to me, the best things about college. A bunch of random people come together in one spot for similar purposes. You start seeing the same people regularly, maybe making some new friends along the way. There’s a great atmosphere, great coffee, and good music - even if the show sometimes is not as good as it could have been. And when it’s all over…well, it happens again, slightly the same, slightly different. I love it, and I can’t wait to get back.
