Description: The Grinnell Coffee Company opened its doors on Monday, March 24, doubling the number of independently-owned coffee shops in downtown Grinnell. As well as offering various types of freshly-roasted coffee, the shop offers ice cream, pastries and, starting April 15, sandwiches, soups and salads.

Owner Garrett Roche has owned the property on Main Street since last year, but said he hoped to someday open his own business long before that. A certified accountant, the former manager of a Starbucks coffee shop, and the partner of Dan Reynolds, German, Roche said he has always wanted to be his own boss, and to be able to control the quality of the products his store offers.

The Coffee Company, he noted proudly, is Grinnell’s only source of freshly-roasted beans. It buys the beans from a company called Jungle Tech, which Roche says is particularly attractive because it deals directly with Peruvian farmers rather than intermediary distributors and is thus able to offer its farmers a living wage.
